The two major closures along Highway 11 this past weekend have prompted the OPP to remind residents on the importance of fire safety. The OPP says safe campfire practices are a must, especially in warm and dry conditions.
Even a cigarette butt thrown out of the window of a car, in the right conditions, can cause a grass or brush fire. Police are asking anyone with spring grass or wood fires to instead consider composting to taking the refuse to a landfill.
The MNRF says it still has crews actively working in the areas near Hearst and White River to suppress what’s remaining of the weekend’s forest fires.
