TWIG is challenging the city to plant beans to combat rising food prices

A local agricultural group is promoting the benefits of home gardening with a new challenge. TWIG, which stands for Together We Inspire and Grow, is hosting a Bean Challenge. Founder of TWIG, Katrena Pelchat, says it was created as a way to raise awareness for the need of local food security to combat rising food prices. She says they picked beans because they’re easy to grow, produce a large amount, and bloom flowers. She says they are easy to plant, and can go directly in the ground or in a pot. She says they will also do well on a balcony for anyone who doesn’t have a yard.

Pelchat says the point of the challenge is to have veggies growing in as many places as possible in Timmins. She says the challenge was created as a way to raise awareness for the need of local food security, to promote agriculture as an option in northern Ontario, and to build community pride.

Pelchat says they have a variety of beans to give away, along with planting instructions. Visit TWIG’s Facebook page for information on taking part in the challenge.
