An upcoming Mother’s Day gala aims to help support local Special Olympic athletes

An upcoming Mother’s Day dinner and dance is looking to garner support for our local Special Olympic athletes. It’s a gala dinner, held on May 7th at the Dante Club. All of the money raised is going to go into helping the athletes travel to different competitions.

Committee Member Christina Grenon says this is the 11th year of the gala, and they are celebrating 40 years of Special Olympics in Timmins. She says the gala is a great help to offset the costs for their athletes. Since most of the competitions are down south in the Toronto area, the expenses add up quickly. She says a lot of the athletes are on a fixed income, and usually have to spend a portion of their own money to get to different events. The money will allow the team to rent buses, provide accommodations, meals, and pay for a nurse to be on hand.

Grenon says the event features a gala dinner, dance, silent and live auctions. Tickets are $80, and are still available. Check out the Special Olympics Gala Facebook page to buy tickets.
