Timmins Women’s Shelter says they are not surprised by Ghomeshi verdict

The Timmins and Area Women in Crisis Centre is responding to the Jian Ghomeshi acquittal. They say the entire case is questioning the adequacy of the criminal justice system in sexual violence cases. They say it also outlined the many reasons why victims don’t report sexual violence. For example, for every 1000 sexual assaults in Canada, approximately 997 assailants walk free. They say the criminal justice system directed all of their questioning at the victim, and being in a relationship doesn’t negate the possibility of violence.

TAWC says not guilty doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

The former CBC Radio Host was acquitted last week on charges for sexual assault and choking. The judge says the inconsistencies in the stories from the complainants played a key role in the verdict. .

TAWC says they are not surprised at verdict, and are now reaching out to victims of sexual assault.  The shelter is there to support survivors, and go through their options. Victims, or families and friends of victims, can call the crisis line anytime at: 705-268-8380.
