Mining safety procedures are being evaluated

Safety guidelines and procedures in the north for mining are under some scrutiny. An inquest examining the death of a miner at the Coleman Mine near Sudbury is making 10 recommendations to improve safety. Steve Perry was crushed to death when 14 tons of rock fell on him during an underground operation in 2012.

One suggestion from the jury is to investigate developing technology for remote loading of ore and also to not have miners working alone. Another recommendation is equip underground vehicles with first aid kits so response time to treat injured workers is reduced. The decisions could affect mining throughout northern Ontario.
