Petition set to be released to have snowmobile speeds lowered on waterways

A Northern Ontario family wants a maximum snowmobile speed of 80 kilometres an hour on frozen lakes. The call follows the death of a French River woman who was hit by a speeding snowmobile while she was near an ice-fishing hut earlier this month. The operator of the sled also died. The OPP blame the crash on speed and visibility.

The victim’s family also wants sleds to slow down to 20 km/hour when they’re within 50 feet of people engaged in activities like ice-fishing. The family will release a petition as soon as their MPP, John Vanthof of Timiskaming-Cochrane, looks at the wording.
