Canada Day festivities amped up this year

The best Canada Day Timmins ever hosted is in store for this year. That’s according to Tourism Timmins Manager Guy Lamarche, who has planned a festival day for the holiday. This year there is going to be a $20, 000 firework show, live music, and guided boat tours. Lamarche says they are taking the event bigger and better this year to celebrate our great country.

“It can become an economic generator, and it’s a great opportunity for the city to rally of the nationalities in one common area to celebrate something that is important to all of us,” says Lamarche.

“Those that are living in the greater Timmins area, say from Hearst to New Liskeard, may see value in taking a trip to Timmins given the extensive program that we’re developing.

He says part of the reason the event is bigger this year, is because an anniversary is being celebrated.

“We’re celebrating 50 years of the Canadian flag this year, and knowing that we’re two years away from the country’s 150th anniversary,” says Lamarche. “So in my mind this is a stepping stone towards 2017.”

Lamarche says they plan to build on this year’s program every year to keep making it better. He referenced the summer concert series and the Kayak Fest as a template for the event.

Also new this year is a shuttle service running from the park to different drop off points around town. Lamarche says because there is going be a food and drink tent, they want to make sure everyone gets home safely.

The drop off points are Whitney Arena, McIntyre Arena, and the Cedar & Algonquin municipal parking lot.

The event is on July 1st at 11 AM at Participark, with the fireworks going off over the Mattagami River.
