HSN in Sudbury is the first hospital in Northeastern Ontario to introduce a new-tool to fight colorectal cancer early on. It’s an endo-rectal ultrasound unit which not only detects colorectal cancer, it helps surgeons remove the disease while it’s still at an early stage. Adding the unit to the hospital’s array of equipment means residents of Northeastern Ontario no longer have to get treatment elsewhere. The hospital is also increasing the size of its surgical program to form a specialized colorectal surgical team. Doctors say colorectal cancer is beatable when detected and treated early. The disease is the second highest cause of cancer-related deaths among men in Ontario and third highest for women.
